  • Notes
    • Mary's first husband was Mr Agusta, with whom she got 2 children: Mary and John. After Mr Agusta died, she re-married, to Agus Gonsalves, with whom she got 1 child, Manoel. Mary and John's surname was changed to "Gonsalves".
    • Mary's nickname was "Mias".
    • Mary and her sisters completed their 5-year contracts in 1861 but did not renew them. This was because Madeiran women were not labourers traditionally, and because their brother Manoel agreed to continue working as a contract labourer and support them.
    • In 1956, Mary Gracis, her brother Manoel and 2 sisters arrived in British Guiana as contract labourers. They were assigned to Enmore estate, on the East Coast of Demerara.
